If you are not handy in the kitchen or feel rushed and tired in the evenings, meal kits could be just the thing for you. There are now many to choose from suiting most dietary needs and budgets.
Main advantages of meal kits are:
Almost all ingredients provided so no need to buy jars of herbs and spices
Everything is the right measurement so no weighing required
Easy to follow recipes for any level of chef!
Delivered to your door!
Review of 5 different meal kits...
#1 Gousto
Gousto is at the top of my list for affordability, variety of recipes and reliability (i.e. rarely is anything missing from the box!)
What I like:
Delivery day of your choice
I used a 2 person box for 4 of us (two adults + 2 picky teens) and beef up with extra veg
Pause the subscription at any time
Use an app to choose meals
The more meals chosen, the cheaper the cost per head
Healthy Choices, 10-minute meals & plant-based options
What is not so good:
Recipes rotate slowly so firm favourites stick around for a while but new recipes are added weekly
Produce is not organic
Average meal cost per head: £4.40
Tip: Once you've tried a recipe, keep the recipe card and make it again with your own ingredients, or tweak it to suit your tastes.

What I like:
Healthy and Vegan boxes available
Pause the subscription at any time
Nutritious ingredients, no refined or processed carbohydrates
100% British meat and poultry, sustainably sourced fish and award-winning fruit and veg in your box
Frozen pre-prepared meals and smoothies mixes also available
What is not so good:
It's pricey but you get what you pay for
May not be suitable for whole family, depends on how picky your children are
Average meal cost per head: £7.90

#3 Hello Fresh
One of the first boxes on the scene, Hello Fresh was a lifesaver when I was working full-time with two young children! I originally gave Hello Fresh a go to inject some diversity into our weekly dinner menu.
What I like:
Great variety of world cuisine recipes
Pause the subscription at any time
Large enough portions allow for leftovers
Family friendly
What is not so good:
Missing/incorrect ingredients on occasion (however, customer service resolves quickly)
Options are 3 meals for 2 people or 4 meals for 4 people so a slightly more expensive option
Average meal cost per head: £7

#4 Grubby
Grubby is a purely vegan meal kit which I tried to help me cook more healthy vegan options. It is very reasonably priced.
What I like:
Healthy balanced plant-based recipes
Pause the subscription at any time
Recyclable packaging, no plastic
Mostly British sourced ingredients
What is not so good:
Not family friendly unless all vegan
Recipe choice was not as broad as other meal kits (but it is still early days)
Average meal cost per head: £4.80 (using a 20% discount offer)
